Twee Hong Suah products taken off shelves

Friday December 30, 2011

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry has ordered the “Twee Hong Suah” traditional medicine products be taken off the shelves immediately because they contain mercury which exceeds the permissible level.

“The products are with the numbers 1103026, 1106013, 1111013 and 1107011 which are used for pain relief on the abdomen, stomach ache, nausea, diarrhoea, cough and fever,” said Health director-general Datuk Seri Dr Hasan Abdul Rahman.

He said the company responsible for registering the products, Hong Yang Hoo Pharma Sdn Bhd, had been ordered to stop supplying the products.

In a statement yesterday, he said tests conducted on the products found that they contained high level of mercury, at 0.5mg/kg, which exceeded the permissible level.

Mercury, if used excessively, could cause, among others, numbness, itchiness, kidney damage or brain damage.
